FLASH Memory Update Utility Release 2.2

This utility is used to save and update FLASH memory. It is recommended
that this utility be executed from a bootable MS-DOS diskette that
contains BIOS recovery files for the target system.

WARNING: This disk is NOT a DOS bootable diskette.

This utility must be executed in a system without memory managers installed.
If EMM386, QEMM, 386MAX, or Windows is active, then the FLASH update
is not safe. Remove any memory manager or exit Windows before executing
the FLASH Memory Update Utility.

SHOWHDR.EXE: This tool is provided to display header information on the
specified FLASH data image.

Usage: SHOWHDR.EXE <FLASH data image filename>

IntelTM486 Classic S-Series incorporates the Phoenix
Technologies system BIOS on a FLASH component. FLASH BIOS
provides easy upgrade capabilities without the need to replace
an EPROM. The upgrade utility fits on a single floppy
diskette and provides the capability to save, verify, and
update the system BIOS.

Using the Upgrade Utility
1. Copy the files to a bootable MS-DOS
    3.3, 4.01, or 5.0 diskette.

2. Reboot the system with the upgrade diskette in the
bootable floppy drive and follow the directions of the easy
    to use menu-driven program.

3. If you do not have a bootable diskette you may execute the command:
    "fmup.exe" at the DOS prompt.

Recovery Mode
In the unlikely event the FLASH upgrade is interrupted
catastrophically the BIOS can be left in an unusable state.
Recovering from this condition requires the following steps.

1. Change jumper J14 to position 1-2.

2. Install the bootable upgrade diskette into drive A:

3. Reboot the system.

4. Because of the small amount of code available in the
non-erasable boot block area, no video is available to
direct the procedure. The procedure can be monitored by
listening to the speaker and looking at the floppy drive
LED. When the system beeps and the drive LED is lit, the
system is copying the recovery code into the FLASH device. As
soon as the system sounds two short beeps and the drive LED
goes off, the system can be turned off.

5. Reset jumper J14 to position 2-3.

6. Leave the upgrade floppy in drive A: and turn the system on.

7. Continue with the original upgrade.
